Why did Facebook acquire Instagram? Simple
The web is full of different opinions on why Facebook has acquired Instragram and whether the price it paid it too high. For me, the answers are easy (although I am simplifying it a bit):
1. Facebook needed something to build it mobile strategy upon. Now they have a very strong outpost there (And forget about sharing access to other social networks - it will disappear soon).
2. Google is putting a lot of time and money into G+ which has some great photo capabilities and Android with Instant Sharing. Instagram will help Facebook in that war a LOT.
And about the price - is that a really a problem for companies like Facebook, Apple, Google? How do you value a company like Instagram with 0 revenues? Well, if it will help Facebook to win the fight with Google, any price will make sense.
